Alfie Kohn: Malibu Library Speaker Series

Wednesday, August 28, 2019

Alfie Kohn will discuss his book, The (progressive) Schools Our Children Deserve."  The knowledge of how children learn – and how schools can help — has come a long way in the last few decades. Unfortunately, most schools have not: They’re still more about memorizing facts and practicing isolated skills than understanding ideas from the inside out; they still exclude students from any meaningful decision-making role; and they still rely on grades, tests, homework, lectures, worksheets, competition, punishments, and rewards. Mr. Kohn explores the alternatives to each of these conventional practices, explaining why progressive education isn’t just a realistic alternative but one that’s far more likely to help kids become critical thinkers and lifelong learners.

Mr. Kohn is the author of 14 books on education, parenting, and human behavior, including "Punished by Rewards" (1993), "The Schools Our Children Deserve" (1999), "Unconditional Parenting" (2005), "The Homework Myth" (2006), and "The Myth of the Spoiled Child" (2014).

He has appeared twice on “Oprah,” as well as on “The Today Show” and many other TV and radio programs, and has been described by Time magazine as “perhaps the country’s most outspoken critic of education’s fixation on grades [and] test scores.” Kohn works with educators and parents across the country and speaks regularly at national conferences. He lives (actually) in the Boston area and (virtually) at
