Malibu Library Speaker Series - Ed Viesturs

Wednesday, October 16, 2019

The Malibu Library Speaker Series is a program of the Malibu Library and the City of Malibu that features experts, authors, and other notable figures discussing a wide range of subjects, including the entertainment industry, literature, science, motivation, the arts, education, sports, travel, food, and the environment.

The Malibu Library Speaker Series presents mountaineer Ed Viesturs on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at 7 pm at the Malibu Library.

Viesturs is widely regarded as this country’s foremost high-altitude mountaineer. He has successfully reached the summits of all of the world’s 14 8,000-meter peaks without supplemental oxygen, an 18-year project he christened Endeavor 8000. His goal was completed on May 12, 2005 with his ascent of Annapurna, one of the world’s most treacherous peaks. He is one of only a handful of climbers in history (and the only American) to accomplish this. That same year, Viesturs was named National Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year. Viesturs has also made seven successful ascents of 29,028′ Mt. Everest, three of these without supplemental oxygen.

Viesturs’s motto has always been that climbing has to be a round trip. All of his planning and focus during his climbs maintains this ethic, and he is not shy about turning back from a climb if conditions are too severe. In spite of his conservative attitude, Viesturs has been one of the most successful Himalayan climbers in American history.

In October 2005 Viesturs bestselling autobiography No Shortcuts To The Top was published and released by Broadway Books. His other books include: The Mountain: My Time on Everest; The Will to Climb; and K2: Life and Death on the World’s Most Dangerous Mountain. Viesturs will be available to sign books following the event.
