Red Flag Season Community Fire Briefing

Saturday, September 21, 2019

One of a series of events and activities scheduled in September for National Preparedness Month 2019

The City will hold a Community Fire Season Briefing to keep the community up to date on the outlook for the upcoming peak fire season. The peak fire season generally begins in the fall with the onset of hot, dry, powerful Santa Ana winds that create extremely dangerous wildfire conditions and often result in Red Flag warnings. Los Angeles County Fire Department Battalion Chief Drew Smith, a Fire Behavior Analyst, will provide information on local fuel moisture, expected weather patterns, and what that means for Malibu.

The actions the City and the Fire Department have taken to prepare for Santa Ana wind conditions will also be discussed. The Fire Department will discuss the status and compliance of the defensible space program throughout the City and anticipated augmented staffing. City staff will discuss what the City has done to prepare for evacuations and possible power outages. Southern California Edison (SCE) will give a presentation on its Wildfire Mitigation and Tree Trimming Plan, as well as its Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) plan.
