City Urges All Residents to Take Survey About Bluffs Parkland

(Malibu, CA) – All of Malibu is encouraged to take a survey designed to gain community input on the three park design options for the Bluffs Parkland project, a major expansion of open space and recreational opportunities for Malibu. The online survey is active through January 29.

“Bluffs Parkland will be a treasure of accessible, natural, green open space and recreational opportunities for Malibu, and strong community input is crucial to ensure that it will truly be a reflection of who we are,” said Mayor Laura Rosenthal. “This survey offers the chance to help shape the future of our community, so I urge all Malibu stakeholders to participate.”

The Bluffs Parkland Master Plan and Environmental Impact Report (EIR) covers 83 acres of undeveloped open space and 10 acres of developed park space. The City and the Santa Monica Conservancy agreed in 2013 to exchange approximately 525 acres of the City-owned Charmlee Wilderness Park for approximately 83 acres of vacant land adjacent to the City’s Malibu Bluffs Park.

On October 14, 2015, the City Council approved the park design priorities based on input gained from a comprehensive community outreach effort involving public meetings, workshops, focus groups and surveys. The City Council directed the project consultants to draft three park design options based on the community input, with all of the approved amenities included in each design.

The amenities include multi-use trails, soccer fields, baseball fields, basketball courts, natural habitat, a public pool and aquatic center, a multi-generational community center, skate park, amphitheater, dog park, and a walking path on PCH.

Community input is now needed on each of the design options to be able to complete a final park design for City Council review. Information received from the survey will be presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission along with the three designs at their meeting on February 19, 2016. The community is encouraged to attend the meeting.

The survey is located on the Bluffs Parkland web page at http://www.malibucity.org/BluffsParkland.

The page also has documents with maps and descriptions of each of the three design options, as well as a chart comparing the various features of each option side-by-side.
