EVENT CANCELLED: 2024 MALIBU LIBRARY SPEAKER SERIES KICKS OFF WITH MIT PROFESSOR AND AUTHOR THOMAS LEVENSON, JANUARY 17

The 2024 season of the Malibu Library Speaker Series kicks off on Wednesday, January 17 with Thomas Levenson discussing his book “Money for Nothing: The Scientists, Fraudsters and Corrupt Politicians Who Reinvented Money, Panicked a Nation, and Made The World Rich.” The free event takes place at 7:00 PM at the Malibu Library.

Thomas Levenson is a Professor of Science Writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His book, published in 2020, dives into the most famous financial scandal in the history of modern capitalism, the “South Sea Bubble.” Levenson’s account of the South Sea Bubble is more than the story of a huge scam; it also explores the birth of modern financial capitalism. These dreamers and fraudsters may have bankrupted Britain, but they made the world rich.

Levenson's other books include “The Hunt for Vulcan (2015),” “Newton and the Counterfeiter (2009),” and “Einstein in Berlin (2003).” He was executive producer for the 2004 PBS mini-series “Origins.” He is also a columnist for The Boston Globe’s Ideas section and contributes regularly to The Atlantic Monthly online, and a documentary filmmaker.
