Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 that news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, three years after President Abraham Lincoln had issued the proclamation, and several months after the end of the Civil War. It has been widely celebrated across the nation by Black communities since then, and was declared a national holiday in 2021. The City adopted it as a holiday in 2023.
