Big Blue Beach Crawl PCH safety Zuma newsflash

Volunteer with the City's Big Blue Beach Crawl to Help Spread the Word About Keeping PCH Safe in Malibu - August 30 at Zuma Beach

Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) safety is a top concern for the Malibu community, and addressing it is a top priority for the City. As part of our multi-faceted approach to improving safety on Pacific Coast Highway, we’re inviting you to volunteer for a special community outreach event on Saturday, August 30, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM at Zuma Beach.

This outreach effort is part of the City’s multi-faceted PCH safety strategy, which includes:

  • Infrastructure and technology, like the City's Traffic Signal Synchronization Project

  • Enforcement, including the City’s funding of additional CHP patrols to support LA County Sheriff’s Department efforts

  • Supporting Legislation, such as helping to get SB 1297 passed to allow the City to install automated speed safety cameras on PCH

  • Education and outreach, like this fun and important event to raise awareness about slowing down and driving with caution on PCH in Malibu.

Originally planned before the 2023 wildfires by the City’s PCH Safety Focus Group, this event is part of "Malibu: Surf, Sand, Slow," the City's PCH safety campaign, which the City launched in response to the tragic loss of four Pepperdine students who struck and killed while standing along PCH. The Focus Group includes representatives from the City Manager’s Office, Public Safety, Public Works, Media Team, LA County Sheriff’s Department, CHP, two Pepperdine students, and two Malibu residents with expertise in advertising and marketing.

We Need Your Help!

We’re looking for enthusiastic community members to volunteer and help spread this life-saving message. Volunteers will:

  • Wear cool, bright blue shirts with the PCH safety campaign designs

  • Walk the Zuma Beach parking area engaging and sharing the PCH safety messages with beachgoers as they get ready to head home

  • Hand out stickers and flyers

  • Help capture social media content for further promotion

  • Spread good vibes with music and bubble guns

Volunteer Shifts:

  • 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

  • 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM

  • All-day volunteers will receive lunch. All volunteers get a t-shirt, drinks, and snacks.

Let’s work together to make PCH safer for everyone—while enjoying a fun summer day at the beach!
