Malibu Community Members Encouraged to Join Virtual Meeting March 10 to Review and Give Their Input on the Community Wildfire Protection Plan Draft
The City's draft Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) will be presented to the public during a virtual meeting on Wednesday March 10, 2021 at 6:00 PM. Everyone in the community is encouraged to watch the meeting, ask questions and share their input. Click here for the meeting link.
“Wildfire is Malibu’s number one public safety threat, and the City is doing everything possible to be prepared and provide residents the resources they need to achieve community-wide wildfire preparedness,” said Mayor Mikke Pierson. “The Community Wildfire Protection Plan is a valuable tool and you can help make sure it is well suited to our community’s particular needs by participating in the meeting, reviewing the draft and sharing your input.”
In June of 2019, the City was awarded a $100,000 Cal Fire grant for the development of a CWPP. A CWPP identifies and prioritizes areas for hazardous fuel reduction treatments and outlines an action plan that will protect at-risk communities and essential infrastructure from wildfire, as well as make recommendations to reduce structural ignitability throughout the community. Having a CWPP in place also increases the City's chances of securing grant funding to implement the recommended action items.
During the meeting, the City's consultant will present the results of their work over the last year, including two public stakeholder meetings, an online community survey, studying the local fire history and fuels, simulations with various fire progression software applications, and numerous site surveys throughout the City, and gather public comments on the draft CWPP.
