[ARCHIVED] Heatwave & Fire Conditions Forecast for Malibu Tuesday - Saturday

Heatwave and Fire Conditions newsflash 6.14.21

heatwave and fire conditions expected in malibu tuesday, june 15 - saturday, june 19

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat watch with temperatures in the 90s and up to around 100 degrees for coastal LA County, including Malibu, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Downtown LA, Hollywood and Long Beach Tuesday morning, June 15 through Wednesday evening evening, June 16. See local weather conditions at

To safely manage the heat, the public is urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on vulnerable relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. See tips from LA County on on how to manage extreme heat conditions at

Fire Conditions

Although there is no Red Flag Warning for the Malibu area, extremely dry fuels not typically seen until late July or August mean elevated to brief critical fire weather. The City tracks tracks Live Fuel Moisture (LFM), the percentage of water content to dry matter content in live vegetation, in the Malibu area as an important part of determining fire danger levels. 60% is considered critical. As of June 14, LFM is 74%, down from 82% two weeks ago. The Los Angeles County Fire Department Forestry Division conducts sampling every two weeks and posts the results at

Potential for Power Outages

Fire weather is power outage weather. Although SCE does not anticipate Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) for Malibu, the heavy power usage during very hot weather as millions of people use their air conditioning can always cause power outages. So be prepared: keep phones, tablets, laptops and other important devices charged, and have backup batteries. Keep your car's gas tank full. Monitor local news for weather and fire conditions, especially on AM/FM radio since you can receive AM/FM radio on a solar, hand crank or battery-powered or car radio, which will operate when the power is out. Make sure you are signed up for emergency, weather and utility alerts from the City of Malibu at: (scroll down to Alert Center) and from LA County at: All current City of Malibu alerts are posted at: For power outage preparedness information, check the Ready LA County guide at:
