CA Redistricting Update: Two Public Meetings as Part of the CA Redistricting Process, Sept. 14 & 29 and Mapping Software to Help the Public Participate in Redistricting

Once every 10 years after the US Census, political boundaries are redrawn for elective offices including LA County Supervisorial Districts, California’s Congressional, State Senate, State Assembly, and State Board of Equalization districts. People and organizations are invited to give their input about where boundaries should be drawn based on "communities of interest," which share common social and economic interests that should be included within a single district for fair representation. Learn more about Redistricting on the California Redistricting Commission's (CRC) website.

Background

In 2016, the California Legislature passed Senate Bill 958, requiring Los Angeles County to assemble the CRC following the Federal census. The role of the CRC is to draw the boundary lines of the five single-member, supervisorial districts of the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors by December 15, 2021. The CRC is to be independent from the influence of the Board of Supervisors.

At the local level, periodic redistricting can help to:

  • Ensure our County's diverse population and communities have opportunities to have their voices heard
  • Enable voters to elect representatives of their choosing and not draw Supervisorial Districts in such a way as to dilute fair opportunities
  • Have Supervisors be responsive to the preferences and needs of residents through public policies to improve lives

This redistricting process is also important to:

  • Rebalance district populations so they are reasonably equal in population
  • Establish districts that are geographically contiguous, while considering topography, geography, cohesiveness, contiguity, integrity, compactness of territory, and community of interest of the Supervisorial Districts
