Malibu Celebrates Native American History at the 23rd Annual Chumash Day Powwow and Intertribal Gathering, April 1 and 2 at Malibu Bluffs Park
The City of Malibu celebrates Native American history and culture at the 23rd Annual Chumash Day Powwow and Intertribal Gathering on Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2 at Malibu Bluffs Park (24250 Pacific Coast Highway). All of Malibu is invited to join the festive cultural celebration honoring Malibu’s original residents and First Americans, the Chumash Native Americans.
“Each spring, the First People of Malibu gather to sing, dance, socialize, and heal at a Pow Wow known as Chumash Day,” said Mayor Bruce Silverstein. "This is a wonderful opportunity for members of our community to join with the Chumash People to enjoy and learn about their history, art, music, dance and culture.”
All of Malibu is invited to join the festive cultural celebration honoring Malibu’s original residents, the Chumash Native Americans.
Continuing a generations-long tradition of Powwows in California, members of tribes from across the west and southwest will gather at Malibu Bluffs Park to sing, dance, socialize and heal. The event will begin with an invocation and prayer led by Chumash-Tataviam elder Alan Salazar. Native American Head Staff include Aaron Martin, Head Man; Emily Sierra, Head Woman; Gabriel Razor, Head Young Man; and Aislynn Arnold, Head Young Woman. Northern Drums, Bear Springs Singers, and Southern Drums, Hale and Company will accompany the dancers.
The event will feature Native American tribal ceremonies, dances, special guest performances, and Chumash history storytelling. Twenty Native American artisan vendors will have merchandise for sale including jewelry, flutes, moccasins, beading accessories, leatherworks, pottery, dream catchers, and more. Food will be available for purchase from D’Amores Pizza, Apollo’s Expresso, Kabob Express, Salt ‘N Pepper, Gostosas Thrill from Brazil, Bison Burger and Bittie Bitez Donuts.
This free family-friendly cultural festival is open for all to attend, no tickets or RSVPs are needed. Event hours are 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM with a Grand Entry at 12:00 PM. Free general parking is available on the corner of Civic Center Way and Webb Way (23575 Civic Center Way) with free shuttle rides available up to Malibu Bluffs Park and back. Parking for people with disabilities is available at Malibu City Hall (23825 Stuart Ranch Road) with free Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant shuttle rides. There is no on-site parking at Malibu Bluffs Park.
