The Entire Community Is Invited to Join in Celebrating the City of Malibu’s 25th Anniversary, March 28 at City Hall
(Malibu, CA) – The City of Malibu will mark its 25-year anniversary with a public reception on Monday, March 28 in City Hall, featuring the grand opening of “The Art of the Board” surfboard installation which celebrates Malibu’s surfing history and culture, a live band, delicious small bites, commemorative gifts, and other festivities. All of Malibu is invited to join in the festivities.
“I encourage every resident to join in this fun and important celebration of all that we have achieved together and how much we have grown in the last quarter century,” Mayor Laura Rosenthal said.
During the City Council meeting on March 28 at the earlier time of 6:00 PM in the Council Chambers, the City Council will present recognitions to many of the City’s founding fathers and mothers and other pillars of the community who have helped shaped Malibu, and will host a screening of a commemorative video being produced for the 25th anniversary.
The reception and grand opening of “The Art of the Board” will take place at 7:00 PM in the upstairs lobby of City Hall immediately following the Council meeting.
For “The Art of the Board,” hosted by the Malibu Cultural Arts Commission, the community was asked to submit unique and artistic surfboards, which will be suspended in the City Hall atrium and will remain on display through September 2016. A special committee reviewed and selected the submitted boards, and renowned artists John Van Hamersveld, Lita Albuquerque and Chuck Arnoldi created artistic surfboards especially for the installation.
John Van Hamersveld, who played an important role in popularizing surfing culture with the creation of his world-famous poster for the classic surfing film “Endless Summer,” will be on hand to autograph copies of the commemorative poster he designed for the anniversary.
Lita Albuquerque and Chuck Arnoldi are acclaimed artists living in Malibu whose works have been displayed in many of the world’s foremost art museums.
The Cultural Arts Commission will also hold a silent auction of a unique artistic surfboard with proceeds benefiting the Malibu Arts Fund.
