City of Malibu, Malibu Library & Pepperdine University Present a Special Earth Month Speaker Series Event Featuring Renowned Environmental Activist & Author Bill McKibben on April 6
(Malibu, CA) – The City of Malibu, Malibu Library and Pepperdine University are teaming up to present a special Earth Month Malibu Library Speaker Series event featuring renowned environmental activist and author Bill McKibben on Wednesday, April 6, 7:00 PM at Pepperdine University’s Elkins Auditorium.
“As a community that was founded on its passion for protecting our environment, it is very exciting to welcome one of the world’s great environmental champions to Malibu for the Earth Month Library Speaker Series,” said Mayor Laura Rosenthal.
Bill McKibben is widely regarded as the foremost climate change activist in the United States and as one of the most important environmental authors of this generation. His 1989 book “The End of Nature” is regarded as the first book for a general audience about the threat posed by climate change and has been published in 24 languages. He’s gone on to write a dozen more books.
"California has had a first-hand look at climate change these last years; now see how it looks to people around the world,” Bill McKibben said.
McKibben is a founder of 350.org, the first planet-wide, grassroots climate change movement that has organized more than 20,000 rallies in every country around the world except North Korea. He is also the Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
The special Earth Day Speaker Series event is part of the City of Malibu’s month-long series of environmental events, including Earth Hour, special recycling drop-offs, education and outreach at the Farmers Market, a "Find & Fix a Leak" Workshop in observation of Earth Day. It is also part of Pepperdine’s annual Climate Calling Conference.
The 2016 Malibu Library Speaker Series is a program of the County of Los Angeles Public Library, Malibu Branch, and the City of Malibu featuring speakers on a wide range of subjects that will appeal to a broad section of the community. Speakers discuss the entertainment Industry, literature, science, motivation, the arts, education, sports, travel, food, and the environment. The events are free and open to the public.
