Be ready for wildfire, sign up for city's alerts and notifications

During wildfires, earthquakes, severe winter storms, or other disasters, Malibu may experience widespread long-lasting power, landline phone, cell phone, and internet service outages. It is critical for life safety to be able to access emergency information such as evacuation orders and routes, assistance resources, shelter locations, damaged infrastructure and more. Here are some options for community members to access this information:

  1. Sign up for the City’s emergency, traffic, and weather alerts via text or email at: Malibucity.org/News (scroll to Alert Center)
  2. Sign up for Disasters Notifications at: MalibuCity.org/DisasterNotifications
  3. Sign up for Emergency Alerts from LA County at: Ready.LACounty.gov/Alerts
  4. Follow the City on Social Media
  5. Monitor the local news using battery, solar, hand-crank radio
  6. Download the PulsePoint App
Fire Hazard

Malibu is in a High Fire Severity Zone so it is up to every person, family, neighborhood, business, and organization to do everything we can to be prepared for a wildfire. The City is committed to achieving community-wide preparedness, and offers these tips to help you get prepared for a wildfire:

  1. Have emergency supplies/ go-bag
  2. Know your neighborhood evacuation routes and look up your Zone (MAL-C111-MALC-114) on the City Evacuation webpage MalibuCity.org/Evac and review the Genasys evacuation zone website Protect.Genasys.com/search 
  3. Follow evacuation directions from Sheriff’s and Fire Department personnel
  4. Harden your home. Schedule an appointment  with the Fire Safety Liaisons for a free Home Wildfire Assessment
  5. Do proper brush clearance. Learn how

Emergency go-bags are important pieces when preparing for a disaster. Here are 10 essential items that you can include in your go-bag: 

  1. Water
  2. Food
  3. First aid kit
  4. Flashlights
  5. Solar/hand-crank radio
  6. Medications (prescription, tylenol/advil)
  7. Cash(small bills) and important documents
  8. Clothing/sturdy shoes
  9. Tools
  10. Hygiene supplies
EVACUATION TERMS- Evacuation order, warning, shelter in place

During a disaster, it is important to know the different terminology used for evacuations. Depending on the urgency of the disaster, there are 3 different levels of evacuation.

  1. Evacuation Order: Lawful order to evacuate now
  2. Evacuation Warning: Potential threat to life and/or property
  3. Shelter in Place: Stay indoors
